History:
The car was purchased in November, 1997 from the second owner.  That owner planned to chop the top off the body and tow it behind his Airstream camper.  He stored it for several months before abandoning the idea and sold it to me.

The original owner worked on or owned a horse farm in Putnam County, NY off Route 9 along the Hudson River. As far as I know the car was kept there from 1970 till 1997.  I don't know how the car was used, or how many miles it actually ran.  The enginewas on a 1971 case, and started up when I bought it, however, with no brakes, it wasn't to be driven away.  The odometer reads 52K and was operational prior to strip-down (I put 15 miles on it towing it home)

State of Bug before restore:

This bug looked ok from a distance, as you can see above.  The paint was a dark blue.  No trace of any other color could be found, other than white primer, some red body filler, and yellow beneath peeling dark blue under the front hood.  The body was undented, save one punched in fender and a few door dings.  The headliner and rear seat had been spray painted flat black. Rust rot had been at work on all the lower extremities.  Rodents had moved into the glove box and other cavities.  Hornets and wasped permeated the taillight seals and built nests in the lenses.  The engine started up with the closing of a rigged-up push button ignition switch. The single remaining running board had been carved out of wood and covered with the original rubber--Ididn't notice till I removed it.  The tube and most of the chassis looked solid.

The biggest challenge would be replacing big sections of the body that had completely rotted away.  I'm talking major Flintstone, like, where did the bottom of this car go?

Parts gone:

Luckily, the major rust was confined to the bottom extremities of the car.  I won't need to replace any sheet metal above the firewalls.
