How to Upload Web Pages with Windows 95/98/NT

Step 1 - Downloading WS_FTP Uploading your Site
Step 2 - Setting Up WS_FTP Important Information
Step 3 - Configuring WS_FTP Additional Resources

Basics

What is uploading? - Uploading is the process of sending the files that make up your web site to our server so that they can be viewed from the web. Of course, before you can upload your web pages, you need to have created a web page which you will have stored on your computer. If possible, we suggest printing this page before you start, as it it is much easier to have it in front of you as you go through the process.

What tools do I need? - There are two programs you need to successfully upload your page. The first, WS_FTP is an FTP program. This is the program you will use to actually transfer your site to the server. In order to speed download time, WS_FTP has been compressed or 'zipped'. In order to setup and use the program you need to decompress or 'unzip' it. This is done using the second program, WinZip. Below we've provided instructions on how to download and setup each of these programs. If you need assistance with this process, feel free to contact our technical support at 1-877-777-BWEB.

Hint on Using this page - Each instruction on this page has a screen shot showing the screen you should be in at that point. To view the screen shot for each step click the icon (no pun intended) associated with each step.

Step 1 - Downloading WS_FTP

  • To download WS_FTP click on the link below called 'WS_FTP For Windows 95/98/NT'.

    WS_FTP For Windows 95/98/NT

  • A screen will pop up called 'File Download'. On it make sure "Save file to Disk" is selected and click "O.K.". Winzip Choose Path ScreenShot

  • Next you will get a window called "Save As" asking you where on your computer you'd like to save the file. Pull down the menu at the top and select 'Desktop'. Once you have 'Desktop' selected, click the 'Save' button and the program will start to download to your computer. After several minutes the program will finish downloading, and you should see a new icon on your desktop called 'ws_ftple.exe'. Winzip Choose Path ScreenShot

    Step 2 - Setting Up WS_FTP

  • At this point you should have an icon on your desktop called 'ws_ftple.exe'. If you don't go back and repeat Step 1 . To start the setup of WS_FTP, double click on the 'ws_ftple.exe' icon.

  • When you double-click on 'ws_ftple.exe', you will automatically launch WS-FTP's setup program.

  • You should now be in the WS_FTP setup program with a light blue background. Click 'Next', and answer the question(s) that pop up.

  • Next you will get the WS_FTP license agreement. Just click 'Yes' to continue.

  • On the next screen which says 'Choose Destination Location', click 'Next'.

  • On the next screen which says, 'Select Program Folder', click Next.

  • Finally, click Finish to exit the installation program.

    Step 3 - Configuring WS_FTP

At this point you should have WS_FTP installed on your system. All we need to do is set up a 'Profile' which tells WS_FTP how to connect to our server. To do this:

  • First, open up WS_FTP. To do this, click on your 'Start' button, go to 'Programs', then 'WS_FTP', and click on "WS_FTP'. This should open the program. It will open up with a default profile. Since we need to create a new one, click the 'New' button.

  • You should how have a blank profile. Fill in the following values in lower case:

    - Profile Name: BestWeb
    - Host Name/Address: ftp.bestweb.net
    - User ID: your username (for example 'john123')
    - Password: your password

Lastly, check the check box called 'Save Password' to the right. Winzip Choose Path ScreenShot

  • Next click on the 'Startup' tab at the top of the profile. It has a place to enter the 'Initial Remote Host Directory'. This is the directory on our server which WS_FTP will open automatically when it connects. For this value just enter 'public_html'.

  • Also on the 'Startup' tab is a field called 'Initial Local Directory'. Set this to the directory on your computer containing the files for your web site. When you've entered this value, click the 'Apply' button to save your profile, and click back to the 'General Tab'. WS_FTP is now all set to use! Winzip Choose Path ScreenShot

    Uploading Your Site

Now that everything is set up, you're ready to upload your site. If you're not already in WS_FTP, open it. You should automatically be at your BestWeb profile. If not, go back and repeat Step 3. When you are ready to connect, click the 'O.K.'. button.

The left hand window shows the files on your computer. It should already be in the folder containing the files that make up your web site. If not, double click on the green up-arrow at the top of the list or the drive letters at the bottom to navigate to the folder containing the files that make up your web site.

On the right-hand window of the program you'll see the files you currently have uploaded to the server. If this is your first time attempting to upload, it should be blank. To upload your web site files, highlight them with your mouse on the left, and click the right arrow in the center of the program. This will transfer the file you select to the server. To select multiple files to transfer, hold down the Control (CTRL) key on your keyboard and click each file you wish to highlight. Winzip Choose Path ScreenShot

That's it! To update your site, just repeat the process. Any file you upload will automatically overwrite whatever is currently on the server.

    Important Information

  • To access your site, go to your web browser and enter the address:

    http://www.bestweb.net/~yourusername.

Obviously you would replace yourusername with your username on our system. For instance the user 'john1234' would have the following URL (web address): http://www.bestweb.net/~john1234'. If you have a domain with us, your URL would be your domain name such as www.yourbusiness.com.

  • In order for your site to come up automatically when someone enters your URL, your first page must have the filename index.html. If you do not have your first page named 'index.html' change it and make sure to update all your links.

  • Keep in mind files on our server are case sensitive. By this we mean a file named MYPHOTOS.JPG is totally different than 'myphotos.jpg' or 'Myphotos.JPG'. If your web site links to an image or file using a different case than what the file is named, it will not show up properly. As a result, it is a good guideline to name all your files in all lower case.
