Hint on Using this page - Each
instruction on this page has a screen shot showing the screen you
should be in at that point. To view the screen shot for each step
click the
icon (no pun intended) associated with
each step. In addition, it may be useful to print this page out to
have as you go through the installation process.
Step 1 - Downloading the Setup Program
- A screen will pop up called 'File Download'. On it make sure 'Save
this program to Disk' is selected and click 'OK'.
- Next you will get a window called "Save As" asking you where on
your computer you'd like to save the file. Pull down the menu at the
top and select 'Desktop'. Once you have 'Desktop' selected, click
the 'Save' button and the program will start to download to your computer.
- After the setup program finishes downloading, a screen will pop
up that says 'Download complete'. Click 'OK'. You should see a new
icon on your desktop called 'mirc56t'.
Step
2 - Installing mIRC
- At this point you should have an icon on your desktop called 'mirc56t'.
If you do not, go back and repeat Step 1. To
start, double click the 'mirc56t' icon on your desktop.
- A screen will up called 'mIRC v5.6 32bit Installation'. There should
be two boxes next to the options 'Make Backups' and 'Add icons to
Program Manager'. Unless you have reason to change these options,
make sure they are both checked and click 'Install' button at the
bottom.
- After going through an installation procedure, a screen will pop
up saying 'mIRC installation was successful!'. Click 'OK' to continue.
- The last step is to remove the mIRC setup program from your desktop.
To do this, click the icon ONCE on your desktop labeled 'mirc56t'
and press 'Delete' on your keyboard. You will be asked if you want
to send it to the Recycle Bin. Click 'Yes'.
Step
3 - Setting up mIRC
- At this point you should already have a window open on your desktop
called 'mIRC'. Inside it, double click the icon called 'mIRC32'. If
you do not have an 'mIRC' folder already on your desktop, click your
Start button, then 'Programs', then 'mIRC', and lastly on 'mIRC32'.
- A screen may come up, called 'About mIRC' giving information about
the program. Just click on the little 'x' in the top right corner
of the screen to close it.
- A screen entitled 'mIRC Options' should pop up. In the column on
the left, Connect should be selected. On the right you should
see a series of options. Towards the top right is a pull-down menu
of servers. A server is a computer somewhere on the Internet which
stores or 'hosts' a number of chat rooms. You can choose any one of
these servers to chat through. Select any server from the menu.
Where it
says Full Name: fill in your full name. Where it says E-mail
Address: fill in your BestWeb user name followed by '@bestweb.net'.
For instance if your username is 'john1234' you would type 'john1234@bestweb.net'.
Where it says Nickname: fill in a nickname. This nickname will
be your 'name' when you chat. Where it says 'Alternative', type in
another possible nickname in case the first one is unavailable. When
you are finished click 'OK' to continue.
- The main mIRC screen should now be visible. Along the top there
are several important icons. By holding the mouse pointer over each
button (but not clicking on it), a small yellow note should appear
telling you the function of each button. For instance, the first one
says 'Connect to mIRC server'. If you click on it, you will connect
to an mIRC server. You may want to familiarize yourself with several
of these buttons before continuing. When you are all set, click the
first 'Connect' button to continue.
- A 'Status' window in the background should start displaying a bunch
of text. In addition, a window will pop up called 'mIRC Channels Folder'.
If the nickname you have chosen is already taken by someone else,
a warning will come up in the 'Status' window telling you to choose
a new one.
IF you need to change your nickname, close the 'mIRC Channels
Folder' by clicking 'OK'. At the very top of the screen, click on
the 'Commands' menu and select 'Change nick'. On the screen that pops up, enter a new nickname. It can, (but does not have
to) include any number or letter. For example, if the nickname 'John'
is taken, you might try 'John1' or 'John1234'. Once you have entered
a nickname, click 'OK'. If your new nickname is taken, repeat this
step until one is accepted. Once you nick is all set, click the
third icon on the toolbar to reopen the 'mIRC Channels Folder'.
Step
4 - Getting Started
- At this point you should be logged onto a server and have the 'mIRC
Channels Folder' window open. Choose a room with a title that interests
you by highlighting it and clicking 'Join'.
- You will now enter into the chat room. In the right-hand column
you should see a list of everyone who is in the chat room. On the
left is the main chat window. At the very bottom is an area in which
you can enter your messages. Just type your message and press the
'enter' key to send it to the chat room for other people to read and
respond to.
