AOL & BestWeb
Connecting to AOL through BestWeb
using Windows 95/98/NT

Basics

These directions help you set up America Online 4.0 to work with BestWeb. If you have any version of AOL previous to 4.0, please download the latest version from AOL's Web Page.

Hint on Using this pages - Each instruction on this page has a screen shot showing the screen you should be in at that point. To view the screen shot for each step click the icon (no pun intended) associated with each step. In addition, it may be useful to print this page out to have as you go through the installation process.

Why would I connect to AOL through BestWeb? There are two main reasons. First because many times AOL's normal modem dial-up numbers are busy. By connecting through BestWeb, you connect through a different mechanism and avoid busy signals. The second reason would be if you do not have a AOL dial-up number local to you. BestWeb provides extensive local coverage thereby saving you from large phone charges to non-local AOL dial-ups

Do I have to contact AOL if I dial up through BestWeb? You should contact AOL because they give you a discount for connecting through another provider. Contact AOL for more information at 1-800-827-3338.

Important Note: If your only reason for having AOL is to chat with friends, you might be interested in a product called the AOL Instant Messenger. The Instant Messenger is essentially the same thing as your AOL 'buddy list'. It shows you which of your friends is online and allows you to chat with them. You don't however need to have an AOL account to use this program, so in some cases it may be to your benefit to close your AOL account thereby saving yourself from having to pay for both your AOL and BestWeb account. For more information or to download the Instant Messenger, visit AOL's homepage at www.aol.com.

Configuring AOL to Connect through BestWeb
