How to Upload Web Pages with Windows
3.1
Basics
What is uploading? - Uploading is the process of sending
the files that make up your web site to our server so that they
can be viewed from the web. Of course before anything you need to
have already created a web page which should be stored on your computer.
If possible, we suggest printing this page before you start, as
it it is much easier to have it in front of you as you go through
the process.
What tools do I need? - There
are two programs you need to successfully upload your page. The
first, WS_FTP is an FTP program. This is the program
you will use to actually transfer your site to the server. In order
to speed download time, WS_FTP has been compressed or 'zipped'.
In order to setup and use the program you need to decompress or
'unzip' it. This is done using the second program, WinZip.
Below we've provided instructions on how to download and setup each
of these programs. If you need assistance with this process, feel
free to contact our technical support at 1-877-777-BWEB.
Please note that these directions may vary somewhat depending on
what type of computer and software you are using.
Hint on Using this page - Each
instruction on this page has a screen shot showing the screen you
should be in at that point. To view the screen shot for each step
click the
icon (no pun intended) associated with each step.
Step
1 - Downloading WinZip
If you already have
WinZip or are familiar with unzipping files, skip to Step
3.
- A screen will pop up called 'Confirm File Open'. Click the 'Save
As...' button to continue.
- Next you will get a window called "Save As" asking you where on
your computer you'd like to save the file. Unless you have reason
to change it, you should leave it set to download to the folder
'C:\IEXPLORE' and click the 'O.K.' button. WinZip will
now start downloading to your computer. Depending on which web browser
you are currently using, you may not see immediate signs that anything
is happening. If you don't see some sort of status window informing
you of your download progress, wait a few minutes and look to the
lower right of your browser. You should start to see a blue bar
creep across showing the progress. Once the status bar has moved
all the way to the right and disappeared, the download is complete
and you are safe to move on to the next step.
Step
2 - Setting up WinZip
- At this point, WinZip should be downloaded to the C:\IEXPLORE
folder. You now need to get back to your main Windows 3.1 screen
or 'Program Manager'. To do this without closing these instructions,
hold down and continue to hold down the ALT key on your keyboard
and tap the TAB key until you see 'Program Manager' in a box in
the middle of your screen. Once you see 'Program Manager' let go
of the ALT key and you should be in Program Manager.
- Once in Program Manager, click the 'File' menu at the top, and
then 'Run'. In the box provided, type in 'C:\IEXPLORE\WINZIP31.EXE'
and click 'O.K.'.
- On the first screen that pops up called 'WinZip 6.3 (SR-1) Setup',
click the 'Setup' button.
- On the next screen entitled "WinZip Setup" it asks you to select
the folder on your computer where WinZip will be installed. Unless
you have reason to change it, leave it set to 'C:\WINZIP' and press
'O.K.' to continue.
- The setup program will quickly copy some files, and then bring
up a window saying 'Thank you for Installing WinZip!'. Just click
'Next' to continue.
- On the next screen 'License Agreement and Warranty Disclaimer',
click 'Yes' to continue.
- On the next screen you are given the option to start with 'the
WinZip Wizard' or 'WinZip Classic'. Select the second option 'Start
with the WinZip Classic' is selected and click 'Next'.
- On the next screen, make sure the first option 'Express Setup
(recommended)' is selected and click 'Next'.
- The last screen will say 'Thank you for installing this evaluation
version'. To complete the setup process, click the 'Finish' button.
At this point you should looking
at the main WinZip screen. For now we want to close this up, so
click on 'File' and then 'Exit'. The next step is to download
the program you will use to transfer your web site to our server,
WS_FTP.
Step
3 - Downloading WS_FTP
- To download WS_FTP click on the link below called 'WS_FTP For
Windows 3.1'.
/usr/local/apache/newhtdocs/assistance/software/win31/ftp/ws_ftp16.exe

- Next you will get a window called "Save As" asking you
where on your computer you'd like to save the file. Unless you have
reason to change it, you should leave it set to download to the
folder 'C:\IEXPLORE'
Step
4 - Setting Up WS_FTP
- At this point, WS_FTP should be downloaded to the C:\IEXPLORE
folder. You now need to get back to your main Windows 3.1 screen
or 'Program Manager'. To do this without closing these instructions,
hold down and continue holding down the ALT key on your keyboard
and tap the TAB key until you see 'Program Manager' in a box in
the middle of your screen. Once you see 'Program Manager' let go
of the ALT key and you should be in Program Manager.
- Once in Program Manager, click the 'File' menu at the top, and
then 'Run'. In the box provided, type in 'C:\IEXPLORE\WS_FTPLE.ZIP'
and click 'O.K.'.
- After you click 'O.K.', you will get a window with the WinZip
license agreement. Click the 'I Agree' button to continue.
- WinZip will now open up with a list of files in the main window.
Click the 'Install' button on the toolbar in the upper right corner
to continue.
- On the next screen to pop up, there will be two check boxes. Make
sure they are both checked and click the 'O.K.' button to continue.
- Next you will get a window labeled 'Caution'. Have no fear and
click the 'O.K.' button to continue.
- On the next screen make sure the 'Install WS_FTP' option is selected
and click the 'Continue' button to proceed.
- Next you will get the WS_FTP license agreement in a window called
'WS_FTP is not Shareware'. Just click 'Accept' to continue.
- On the next screen which says 'Please enter the destination directory',
click 'OK'.
- The next window should be titled 'Locate Directory'. This is the
location on your computer where WS_FTP will transfer files to. In
most cases you should set this to the location of your web site
on your local computer such as C:\MIST. If you are
unsure which folder to use, just leave it as is and click 'O.K.'.
- On the next screen called 'FTP Installation' make sure the top
box '16 bit 4 window version (Windows 3.x)' is checked, and click
'O.K.'.
- On the next screen labeled 'Input' click 'O.K.'.
- The next screen will ask you what 'Program Manager Group' you'd
like to put WS_FTP in. This is the folder or 'group' where the WS_FTP
icons will be stored. Unless you have reason to change it, leave
it set to 'WS_FTP' and click 'O.K.'.
- The next screen called 'Congratulations!' informs you that the
installation was successful. Click 'O.K.' to continue.
- At this point, you should be back in your main Windows 3.1 screen,
Program Manager. In addition, although it may be hidden, there is
a WinZip screen open somewhere in the background that we need to
get back to. To do this, hold down and continue holding down the
ALT key on your keyboard and tap the TAB key until you see 'WinZip
(Unregistered) - WS_FTPLE.ZIP' in a box in the middle of the screen.
Once you see this, let go of the ALT key and the next screen should
pop up.
- Finally you will get a window presenting you with two choices.
Select the second option 'No Uninstall Wanted' and click the 'O.K.'
button.
- After you click 'O.K.' you should be back in WinZip with a listing
of files in the mail window. We're all done with WinZip so close
the program by clicking on the 'File' menu at the top and then 'Exit'.
Step 5
- Configuring WS_FTP
At this point you should
have WS_FTP installed on your system and you should be back in
your Windows 3.1 Program Manager. The first step in configuring
WS_FTP is to open the program. If not already open, open up the
WS_FTP program group and double click on the WS_FTP icon. The
program should have open automatically to a screen called 'Session
Profile'. This is the area where we enter certain information
telling WS_FTP how to connect to our server.
- The first thing we need to do now that the program is open is
start out with a new profile. To do this click on the 'New' button
towards the top of the 'Session Profile' window.
- You should how have a blank profile. Fill in the following values
in lower case:
- Profile Name: BestWeb
- Host Name/Address: ftp.bestweb.net
- User ID: your username (for example 'john1234')
- Password: your password
- Remote Host: public_html
- Local PC: The directory on your computer containing your
web site i.e. C:\MYSITE
Lastly, check the check box called 'Save Password' to the right.
Uploading
Your Site
Now that everything is set
up, you're ready to upload your site. If you're not already in
WS_FTP, open it. You should automatically be at your BestWeb profile.
If not, go back and repeat Step 5. When you
are ready to connect, click the O.K. button.
The left hand window is divided into two sections. The top left
window allows you to change which disk drive and folder you are
in. The lower left window shows the files inside whatever folder
you are currently in. It should already be open to the folder
containing the files that make up your web site. If not, double
click on the green up-arrow at the top of the list the drive letters
and folders in the top left window and navigate to the folder
containing the files that make up your web site.
On the right-hand window of the program you'll see two similar
windows, except the files and folders listed are the ones on our
server. If this is your first time attempting to upload, it should
be blank. To upload your web site files, highlight them with your
mouse on the left, and click the right arrow in the center of
the program. This will transfer the files you select to the server.
Once they are on our server they will then be visible to the world
(see below for details). To select multiple items to transfer,
hold down the Control (CTRL) key on your keyboard and click each
file or folder you wish to highlight.
That's it! To update your site, just repeat the above process.
Any file you upload will automatically overwrite whatever is currently
on
the server.
Important Information
Obviously you would replace yourusername
with your username on our system. For instance the user 'john1234'
would have the following URL (web address): http://www.bestweb.net/~john1234'.
If you have a domain with us, your URL would be your domain name
such as www.yourbusiness.com.
- In order for your site to come up automatically when someone
enters your URL, your first page must have the filename index.html.
If you do not have your first page named 'index.html' change it
and make sure to update all your links.
- Keep in mind that files on our server are case sensitive.
By this we mean a file named MYPHOTOS.JPG is totally different
than 'myphotos.jpg' or 'Myphotos.JPG'. If your web site links
to an image or file using a different case than what the file
is named, it will not show up properly. As a result, it is a good
guideline to name all your files in all lower case.
