How to Upload Web Pages with a Macintosh

[Downloading Interarchy] [Important Information]
[Configuring Interarchy] [Additional Resources]
[Uploading your Site]

Basics

What is uploading? - Uploading is the process of sending the files that make up your web site to our server so that they can be viewed from the web. Of course before anything you need to have already created a web page which should be stored on your computer. If possible, we suggest printing this page before you start, as it is much easier to have it in front of you as you go through the process.

What tools do I need? - The only program you need is called Interarchy This is what you will use to actually transfer your site to the server. Below we've provided instructions on how to download and setup the program. If you need assistance with this process, feel free to contact our technical support at 1-877-777-BWEB. Please note that these directions may vary somewhat depending on what type of computer and software you are using. These instructions assume you are using Internet Explorer 4.5, but they should be consistent regardless of what browser you have.

Hint on Using this page - Most instructions on this page have a screen shot showing the screen or window you should be viewing at that point. To view the screen shot, click the icon (no pun intended) associated with each step.

Downloading Interarchy

  • To download Interarchy click on the link below called 'Interarchy for Power Mac'.

Interarchy for Power Mac

  • At this point you should follow the on screen instructions to download the most current version of Interarchy.
  • Configuring Interarchy
  • Interarchy should now open and give you a window with a list of different options. Double-click where it says 'FTP Accounts' to continue.
  • A windows will now pop up called 'Get via FTP' which will ask you for a number of settings. This is the information that tells the program how to connect to the server. Fill in the following values in all lower case:
Server: ftp.bestweb.net
Path: ~yourusername/public_html
Username: your username
Password: your password

  • Once you have all the values typed in properly, click the 'Save' button. By clicking on the save button, we're telling the program to store all the settings we entered so we don't have to type them in again.

  • On the next screen that comes up called 'Save Password?', enter your password in the box provided. After you've done that, click the 'Save Password' button.

  • You will now be asked where you want to store the settings on your computer. The easiest place to do this is on your Desktop. If it's not already selected on the window that pops up, pull down the drop down menu and select 'Desktop'. By default the settings will be saved in a file called 'public_html Bookmark'. Unless you want to change this, click the 'Save' button to finish the setup process

Uploading Your Site

Now that everything is set up, you're ready to upload your site. You should have an icon on your desktop called 'public_html Bookmark' which we just set up in the steps above. To connect to the server, all you need to do is double click on this bookmark file. This will automatically open your public_html folder on our server. This public_html folder is where you need to store the files which make up your web site in order to make them accessible to the world.

Once your public_html folder is open, all you need to do is drag your files and or folders into it. Interarchy will automatically transfer the files. To select more than one file to transfer at a time you can drag a selection box around everything you want to select, or hold down the Shift key and click on each item separately.

To update your site, just repeat the process. Any file you drag into your public_html folder should automatically overwrite the existing files.

Important Information

  • To access your site, go to your web browser and enter the address:

    http://www.bestweb.net/~yourusername.

Obviously you would replace yourusername with your username on our system. For instance the user 'john1234' would have the following URL (web address): http://www.bestweb.net/~john1234'. If you have a domain with us, your URL would be your domain name such as www.yourbusiness.com.

  • In order for your site to come up automatically when someone enters your URL, your first page must have the filename index.html. If you do not have your first page named 'index.html' change it and make sure to update all your links.
  • Keep in mind that files on our server are case sensitive. By this we mean a file named MYPHOTOS.JPG is totally different than 'myphotos.jpg' or 'Myphotos.JPG'. If your web site links to an image or file using a different case than what the file is named, it will not show up properly. As a result, it is a good guideline to name all your files in all lower case.
