How do I check my E-mail?

The easiest way is to use our WebMail feature which allows you to send and receive E-mail right through your web browser. To use WebMail, click on the 'WebMail' link on our home page, the WebMail link at the top of any of our web pages, or point your browser to 'E-mail.bestweb.net'. You can also use a standard E-mail program on your computer such as 'Outlook Express' or 'Eudora Light'. If you need help setting up an E-mail program contact our Technical Support department at 1-877-777-BWEB or E-mail support@bestweb.net.

How can I get additional E-mail addresses?

Each BestWeb personal account is allowed up to five additional E-mail addresses. To add additional addresses to your account, simply give us a call toll free at 1-877-777-BWEB or E-mail support@bestweb.net". For each E-mail address you'll need to let us know the username and password you'd like for that address. The username will be the first part of the E-mail address (i.e. username 'bill' would be bill@bestweb.net) and can be anything up to 8 characters. The password you select must be at least 4 characters.

How do I change my BestWeb password?

To change your password, you need to call a BestWeb Support Representative. There are various security issues we are working on developing patches for and when these are ready we will offer online changing of your password.

How do I chat?

You can chat in a number of ways. The easiest is through a web page. One popular chat site we suggest is Yahoo Chat. Another method, although a bit more complicated, is using an Internet feature call IRC. Like many of you who use a separate E-mail program to get your E-mail (such as Outlook Express or Eudora), you need to use a separate program for IRC. Can you stop my kids from getting pornography or other inappropriate material?

How do I create a web page?

There are two main methods for creating a web page. The first choice used by most people is to use an 'HTML Editor'. An HTML editor is a program that allows you to create a web page visually similar to a word processor. Some popular editors for the PC are Microsoft Frontpage and Macromedia Dreamweaver. The most popular HTML editor for the Macintosh is GoLive CyberStudio. The second method is to program the page in HTML, the language web pages are created in. Why don't I connect at my modem's top speed or sometimes have trouble getting or staying connected?

There are a number of reasons why this could be happening. The most common cause is usually related to the quality of your phone line or the phone network in your area. Old wiring or lines with a larger amount of line noise or static (even undetectable to the human ear) can dramatically affect connection speed and reliability. In most cases, replacing or repairing internal wiring in your home or contacting the phone company can resolve this problem. However in some cases you may never be able to achieve a speed over 26400 bps. When it comes to higher speed 56k modems, it's important to recognize that not all local phone companies can support 56k speeds, resulting in a maximum connection speed of no higher than 33.6.

It is also possible that you have incorrect settings in your software or you may be dialing into the wrong BestWeb dial-up number. If you have questions about your settings or connect speeds, feel free to contact our technical support at support@bestweb.net.

Can I send Instant Messages to my friends on AOL or elsewhere on the Internet?

Yes! America Online offers a program called the "Instant Messenger" which allows anyone to chat with AOL users. This free program and instructions on how to download and install it can be found at AOL's Instant Messenger Page. You can also get another free program called ICQ to chat with friends or associates anywhere on the Internet. Your can download ICQ from the ICQ Home Page.

What are cookies and should I be concerned by them?

Often times when visiting a web site, you'll be informed that you are being sent a 'cookie'. A cookie is a small bit of information stored on your computer that allows you to 'save settings' for certain web sites, and gives the site owner information on how many times a person visits their site. Cookies are completely harmless. They cannot access your computer, any of the information stored on it, or any information about you. They are so tiny, thousands of them would take up almost no space on your computer.

How do I move my data from shell.bestweb.net or monet.bestweb.net to shell2 or monet2?

These are the steps necessary to do so:

• First, ssh (preferred) or telnet to shell.bestweb.net. This will put you right in your home directory.
  
  
• From there, type 'ncftp -u <username> ftp.bestweb.net'.
  This puts you right in your home directory in ftp.bestweb.net.
  You -must- use the -u <username> argument or you will not log into your directory
  
  
• From there, you can move a single file with: 'get <filename>' or move an entire directory with: 'get -R <directory>'
